Walking is a very low impact form of exercise and a perfect way to stay healthy especially in cold weather or if you aren’t as mobile as you’d like to me. It certainly won’t take you down a dress size in a week but coupled with a healthy lifestyle, walking more will make you healthier and save your money.
Walking is amazing for you. It strengthens the heart and prevents cardiovascular diseases. And walking not only is good for your body, it boosts your mind. Studies show that a brisk walk is just as effective as antidepressants in mild to moderate cases of depression, releasing feel-good endorphins while reducing stress and anxiety.
The calories you burn whilst walking can be very different based on your weight and your pace but verywell.com gives the rule of thumb as 100 cals per mile (30mins roughly) if you weigh 180lbs or 65 cals if you weigh 120lbs.
If you’re fit and healthy, you should walk anything under an hour as a general rule. If you’re on route to getting healthy, aim for 30mins minimum. You’ll soon see the weight drop and your bank account stay stable.
I used to spend £9 a day on Uber to and fro the train station to go to work. It was less than a 30min walk and now I stay fit and save up to £2000 a year! It’s crazy money. It’s the same with popping to the shops when you live less than 30mins walk from town. Save your petrol and your money by walking as much as possible.
To keep yourself entertained get yourself a basic, second hand MP3 player from a second hand retailer (like CeX) and load it up with some music and podcasts. My taste in podcasts are ones that are a bit nerdy and funny. If that sounds like you then these are podcasts that I can highly recommend:
The Writers Panel
Penn’s Sunday School
Richard Herrings Leicester Square Theatre Podcast
What’s Say You?
I also recommend Spotify. It’s about £10 a month for premium (non advert) mobile use but I can count on one hand the artists I’ve NOT been able to find. It’s also great to be the one at the party with Spotify and it’s amazing to just put on anything you want at any point. I got it and never looked back.
