When purchasing, a lot of people will only consider if they can afford it – not if they should actually buy it. I know that going into a clothing shop automatically puts me into shopping mode. When I see a reasonably priced item, the question sometimes in my head is ‘Can I afford this?’. Then I answer myself ‘Yes’ and I buy it. However what you should be asking if ‘should I buy it?’. However, you may lie to yourself so here’s a mental trick to answer that question in a honest way and complete as many no spend days as possible
How This No Spend Trick Works
When your in the throws of wondering if you should purchase, you have to imagine there is a stranger standing in front of you. In one hand they have the item you’re looking at and in the other they have it’s value in cash. Ask yourself which hand you would pick given the choice.
If you would rather have the cash for your budget and your goals then don’t buy the item. Just because you can afford something, doesn’t mean you should buy it today.
If you want the item more than the small progress it will make towards your goals then treat yourself on this occasion.
If a stranger were to come up and offer you £3.50 in your bank to skip your morning cup of coffee then you might just consider it. And that’s how this question will get you through your no spend days.
