8 Frugal Flying Tips

It’s no secret that buying a flight cheap is often as much luck as it is skill. I’ve travelled a lot in my 25 years and I’ve yet to have conclusive evidence of how to why airlines price the way they do. Unfortunately they do whatever the hell they like and that doesn’t seem to be changing soon. So below are my researched top tips for frugal flying.

  1. Airlines change fares constantly, often multiple times a week. So  start checking fares as soon as you know you’ll be flying. Then, check continuously, at least once a week to get a sense of what’s a good deal.
  2. You’ll likely pay a big premium for booking too late (within 14 days), or for booking too early (more than 5 months in advance). Somewhere between 3 weeks and 4 months in advance is usually the sweet spot for flights
  3. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are generally the least expensive days for flights and Friday and Sunday are the most expensive.
  4. Never go in the school holidays, bank holidays or Christmas (if it can be helped).
  5. Check different airlines for cheapest flights. So fly out on Ryanair and back on Easyjet if that helps you save some pennies.
  6. Always read the policy on baggage. The last thing you want after you’ve saved and budgeted is to be hit with a bill for your bag.
  7. If there’s more than 1 airport in your destination, don’t forget to check them both. Factor in travel to your destination.
  8. And don’t forget to check alternate routes like flight close and getting the train or the Eurostar. Recently on my visit to Paris I travelled to London on the train then Eurostar. It took the same amount of time as it would have done had I gone to an airport to wait AND the train station is miles nearer central Paris than the main airport.
